Itinerary:

Day 1: Sandakan
  • On arrival in Sandakan Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.
  • Meet your guide in your hotel lobby and proceed to Sandakan jetty for your shared boat schedule at 12:00 and transfer to the Kinabatangan River.

    This two-hour boat journey passes by local villages, lush rainforest and provides excellent wildlife-spotting opportunities for those looking to gander at some of Borneo’s quirky inhabitants.

    Arrive at the lodge, check in and enjoy lunch. The Local guide will conduct a briefing on the upcoming activities and provide advice on recommended gear.

    Late in the afternoon, at 16:30 hop on a riverboat for a cruise up the Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife - most notably, the proboscis monkeys which are endemic to Borneo. Other fauna that are likely to be spotted in the Lower Kinabatangan Reserve include elephants, hornbills, gibbons, and many birds. Return to the lodge for dinner before mid-evening and take a stroll along the boardwalk on a lookout for nocturnal animals and interesting insects.

  • Rise early in the morning along with the birds and other animals of the river for a cruise to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake, a crescent shaped lake that formed when the river’s meander became so wide that it cut itself off. The stillness of the lake and relative protection provides a haven for animals and plants making for an ecosystem that’s completely distinct from that of the river.

    Return to the resort and spend the rest of the day at leisure before heading out in the late afternoon to watch the river activities of many primate species that become active during this time. The afternoon is a particularly advantageous time to spot wildlife, and the light is perfect for photography.

    This afternoon we will set off for another afternoon cruise in search of the mangrove specials, river sceneries, village landscapes and more wildlife. On good weather, we may even get to see firefly colonies which are found at certain parts of the river. Cruise back to KWR for dinner at the common area.

    After dinner, we shall take the night river safari on a lookout for our target species and return to the lodge

  • After breakfast you will have a chance to explore the nature board walk around the lodge area.

    Check out from your lodge and transfer to the Sepilok Forest Edge Resort.

    The jungle comes alive at night, and the Night Walk Rainforest Discovery is a great opportunity to explore the often-missed nocturnal animals that inhabit these lush jungles. A local guide will point out a variety of insects and wildlife that hide under the cover of darkness and then appear literally right before your eyes!

    Aside from the Plant Discovery Walk, which features information about the medicinal and traditional use of herbs and leaves, there is a 475-meter-long 87-meter-high canopy walkway. Nestled high amongst the rainforest tree line, this provides a great opportunity to spot on the 250-300 bird species and maybe even a wild orang-utan. It’s the best outdoor classroom to learn about the rainforest biodiversity. Enjoy the anticipation to watch the Red Giant flying squirrel coming out around dusk time.

  • This morning, your tour begins with a visit to the world's largest orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok. At the centre, guests can witness the orangutans being fed by the rangers.

    Note: The feeding times are very popular, so expect crowds at the platforms.

    Stroll the jungle-flanked wooden walkways to the central platform; orangutans can sometimes be seen from these platforms, so guests should have their cameras ready!

    Continue your visit to the outstanding Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where guests have the opportunity to observe these stunning animals. There are currently 36 bears housed at the centre, which have been rescued from poachers. You also have the opportunity to adopt a bear to ensure the programs, and the animals' survival (at your own expense).

    After leaving the centre, you will be transferred from Sepilok to Sandakan Airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu.

    Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel located in the city centre, where you will have an evening at leisure. You might like to take a short walk from your hotel to the famous waterfront markets, where nightly seafood stalls offer delicious food in a lively waterside setting.

  • Your city tour covers a viewpoint known as the Signal Hill for a bird’s eye view of the city, the offshore Islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and Atkinson Clock Tower. Proceed to Tun Mustapha (formerly Sabah Foundation) building. Experience your senses of sight, sound and taste at the local handicraft market, formerly known as the Filipino Market

    Depart Kota Kinabalu on a private transfer to the Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort for 7 nights, where the sea meets the rainforest on this 400-acre beach resort with a 3 km white sandy beach, 64-acre forest reserve and 18-hole golf course. Soak in the sun, sand and the sea or enjoy the great outdoors with over 60 activities at the resort.

  • After breakfast, you will check out and transfer to Kota Kinabalu airport for your departure flight.
